I received my 200 hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training at SivaSoorya Divine School of Yoga in Kerala, India in 2012. My training explored one of the most traditional forms of yoga. Its focus is to stimulate the endocrine glands in the body which support and maintain whole-body health. One aspect of this style is kriya yoga which incorporates breathing exercises to strengthen our voluntary breathing muscles and relax the body. Breath is the lifeforce of your body, by strengthening and gaining control of our breath we consequently strengthen and gain control of our body and mind allowing us to eventually control our perceptions of the sensations we experience within each of the poses. The yoga postures themselves are meant to be deep, long-lasting and contemplative.
We enter into a pose and hold it long enough to gain control over our breath and subsequently our sensations and mental/physical experience within the pose. In maintaining these poses for longer periods we heighten our awareness of our bodies and minds as well as the effects each pose has on them. The more physically strong we become, the more mentally and emotionally strong we become, allowing us to control our own life and the experiences within it.
In my classes I stress the importance of moving slowly and using our breath to listen to our bodies, knowing what feels good and what doesn't, thus maximizing the many therapeutic benefits and minimizing pain. Holding poses longer works to create deep strength and also gives us the opportunity to perfect alignment within each pose.
Yoga is the practice of experiencing yourself at a deeper level, in my asana practice we work to connect with, strengthen, love and accept ourselves. I emphasize taking time to close our eyes within each pose to go beyond the physical aspects to experience the emotional aspects, seeking a deeper sense of peace and awareness.
