Something I aim to bring forth in my work is the understanding that "spirituality" can and should be an everyday occurrence for each and every person. I believe that the term "spirituality" has gotten bogged down with so many stereotypes that its accessibility has become severely limited to only a select few. This means that there are many people who do not tap into this tool who could use the support, or people who want to tap into this tool but fear they don't have the "right stuff" to access it.
Spirituality is really just connection with Spirit (God, Source, whatever you want to label that which truly cannot be labeled), but Spirit is within everyone and everything, therefor Spirituality is really just connection. When you start making it more complicated than that problems will undoubtedly ensue. Spirituality is staying connected with yourself and the world around you. How you choose to do this is entirely up to you, all that matters is that you do it. Your spiritual practice is intended to help you stay on track. Sometimes you need to stay on track because life is in a really difficult place and daily existence is a challenge. Sometimes you need to stay on track because lie is so great and fast paced but you want to make sure that each step you take is the right step. The spiritual practice serves to keep the ego in check. Ego can puff you up and it can hold you back. Ego wants you to think that you are better than other people. Ego can also make you believe that you are not worthy, that you must earn the right to thrive. Spirituality gets you in touch with your Soul, who loves you regardless of rank and knows that your right to thrive is a birthright, not an earned right. This helps you to find what you truly need in life: job, income, health routine, relationships. So much of misery comes from seeking that which you don't truly need, but what your ego has made you believe you need. Sometimes this means lack and sometimes this means greed. Neither is right and both are defined differently for each person. Your spiritual practice helps you to answer the questions, "What do I need?" and, "How will it serve me?" The answer to these questions is neither lack nor greed but abundance. If you are here to experience certain joys and challenges, to move forth along a certain path, then your spiritual practices are what keep you on track with this path. Any time you are feeling unsure, or lacking motivation, or your head is full of limiting thoughts then you're missing your spiritual practice. Life is supposed to flow, that isn't saying that it is supposed to be easy or fun, but it is supposed to be relatively fluid. This fluidity isn't a result of ease and it isn't always a result of action, it is a result of perception. Your perception of life directly affects your experience in life and your perception of life is a direct result of your spiritual practice. The more connected you are with yourself and your world the easier it is to relax and flow, regardless of what is thrown at you. The stronger your practice is, the easier it is to step back from weight of the world and of your ego and embrace a sense of love and peace beyond all else. Is this easy? Absolutely not. That is why you have your spiritual practice, to work towards making it easier. Consider your favorite practice- meditation, journaling, exercising, art, yoga, etc.- how do you feel after it? Likely you feel alive, at peace, more accepting, more loving, happier. Your spiritual practice turns you on, ignites the true you that exists beyond the ego and all its bullshit. Now, the goal is to practice so frequently that this "light" either remains on or at least that the "darkness" only comes through for short periods of time before being diminished once more. The more you build spiritual practices into your daily routine the more your mind and body get trained by the Soul to live a connected existence. Spiritual practices will always be necessary to support balance and growth, but the better you get at them the more your daily life will become spiritual existence. Connection becomes the innate state of being and when adversity is experienced it is felt then overcome without lingering affects. Want to foster your spiritual practice? Chelsea M LathamWhen I was a kid my mom would occasionally refer to me as a Reverend, because I had the need to speak so passionately about just about everything. Little did she know that some day I would build a business upon sharing the wisdom that I am so passionate about. So here you go, here are some bits and bobs of thoughts strung together for your enjoyment. Archives
